Ditching the Ditch: I-80 Ditch Pull Out

Icy Intervention

Last week, we received an urgent call that required immediate action. A driver had unhooked from his trailer to put tire chains on, but the trailer slid off the road due to very icy road conditions. The driver could not get back underneath the trailer. We needed to pull the tractor back under the trailer and then pull both out of the ditch. This incident occurred on I-80, west of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Despite the difficult weather conditions, we dispatched one of our tow trucks, ready to tackle this I-80 ditch pull out .

The first step was to reconnect the tractor to the trailer. Given the icy conditions, the operator took extra precautions to ensure everything was secure and safe. The trailer had slid off the road after the driver detached from it to install tire chains. Our operator carefully maneuvered the 30-ton tow truck to pull the tractor back under the trailer.

Once the tractor was securely reconnected to the trailer, the next step was to pull both vehicles out of the ditch. The operator used the tow truck’s powerful winch and other equipment to gradually and safely pull the trailer and tractor back onto the road. The entire operation took about 2.5 hours from start to finish. Despite the adverse weather conditions, including fog, snow, and ice, our operator got the job done.
